Made by Marley Splendid Stencils for furniture, home decor and craft. Three reusable plastic stencils per set, designed and made in the Scottish Borders.
Splendid Stencils are Made by Marley's own, and they are designed as sets rather than as single sheets. Each pack holds three stencils that share a subject and are drawn to be used together — so one purchase can pattern a whole piece of furniture rather than one panel of it.
They are cut from plastic and made to be reused. Washed after use and laid flat to dry, they will last for years, which is the difference between a stencil that pays for itself across several projects and one that curls after two.
The method is a stencil brush and a light hand: dip, offload most of the paint onto kitchen paper, then swirl or stipple through the openings. Bleed-through under the edge comes from too much paint on the brush rather than from the stencil itself, and once you have offloaded properly the edges stay crisp.

- Fix the stencil down. Masking tape or a light spray adhesive will both do it. Movement is the main cause of a blurred edge, so it is worth the extra minute.
- Load the brush lightly. Dip a stencil brush into the paint, then offload most of it onto a piece of kitchen paper. Too much paint on the brush is what causes bleed-through under the stencil — not the stencil itself.
- Swirl or stipple. Work the brush in a gentle circular motion over the open areas, or stipple straight down into them. Build the colour up in two or three light passes rather than trying to cover it in one.
- Lift the stencil straight off while the paint is still wet, and put it to one side to wash.
- Wash and dry flat. Warm, soapy water, then laid flat on a clean surface. Avoid bending the plastic, and the stencils will last for years.
