What is Alchemy by Fusion and how is it different from regular Fusion Mineral Paint?
Alchemy is a true chalk-style furniture paint made from acrylic, limestone and chalk, so it delivers an ultra-flat, velvety finish you can leave matte or top-coat for extra durability, whereas Fusion Mineral Paint has a built-in self-sealing resin for a low-sheen, wipe-clean surface.
Which surfaces can I paint, and do I need to sand or prime first?
On most sound, wax-free surfaces Alchemy only needs a quick clean and light scuff-sand. Use Fusion’s Ultra Grip for very slick laminates, glass or thermofoil to boost adhesion. Use a stain-blocking primer such as Zinsser Bin to prevent tannin bleed-through, particularly when applying light colours onto bare wood.
How much paint will I need?
A 500ml pot (pint) of Alchemy covers about 7m² / 75 sq ft (roughly a large dresser), while a 120ml small project pot reaches around 2m² /18 sq ft, handy for chairs, side tables or accent stripes.
How long does Alchemy take to dry and fully cure?
Alchemy is dry to the touch in 30–60 minutes and ready for a second coat after roughly 2 hours. It reaches maximum hardness in about 21 days, so treat freshly painted pieces gently during that time.
Do I need to seal or wax Alchemy paint?
The flat, chalk-style finish can be left bare for a soft vintage look, but a finishing coat of Tough Coat, Ultra Guard, or furniture wax is recommended on kitchen tables, cabinet doors or anywhere prone to water, heat or heavy use.
Is Alchemy safe to use indoors?
Yes. Its water-based, low-VOC formula has minimal odour, making it ideal for apartment projects and winter painting sessions.
Can I distress, layer or blend colours for a vintage look?
Absolutely! The slightly thicker, highly-pigmented texture sands back beautifully, responds well to damp-cloth distressing, and blends smoothly for ombré or artistic layered effects.
Can I spray Alchemy?
Alchemy was designed for hands-on use. Spraying atomises the paint into breathable particles and is therefore not recommended for health and safety reasons.
Can I mix Alchemy colours together?
Yes! Feel free to combine any shades to create custom hues and expand the 24-colour palette.
Can I add decor transfers, decoupage, or stencils on top?
Alchemy loves embellishments! Let the paint dry, apply your transfer or stencil design, then seal the whole piece if extra protection is needed. For transfers, in particular, follow the manufacturer's guidance.
Dark ultra-matte colours show fingerprints: how do I protect them?
Deep shades like Onyx naturally reveal light marks. A gentle wipe usually removes them, or add a matte Tough Coat or Ultra Guard to keep the depth of colour while resisting marking.
Is Alchemy suitable for outdoor furniture?
It’s formulated for interior projects. For exterior pieces choose Fusion Mineral Paint or apply an appropriate outdoor-rated sealer over Alchemy.
Can I paint kitchens and floors with Alchemy by Fusion?
For high wear uses such as kitchens and floors Fusion Mineral Paint is likely to be more suitable. But if Alchemy matches your intended look (for example, you want a more rustic or vintage look) then you must finish it with a durable top coat such as Tough Coat or Ultra Guard.
