Description

Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint is made for people who would rather be painting than preparing. There is no sanding, no stripping and no priming — clean the piece, let it dry, and start.

It goes on thick and covers well. A darker shade will often do it in one coat, a lighter one usually takes two, and it is dry to the touch in about fifteen minutes, so a chest of drawers can be painted in an afternoon. The finish is properly flat and chalky, which is what makes it so satisfying to distress: take a sanding sponge to the edges and raised details and you get the soft, worn look that suits an older piece.

It grips more than wood. Laminate, metal, glass, ceramic, plastic and fabric are all within range, which makes it useful on the things that would otherwise need a specialist primer first.

Left alone, the paint hardens over three to four weeks into a finish that stands up on its own. If the piece is a kitchen or bathroom cabinet, a table top, or anything that lives outdoors, seal it instead of waiting — Clear Coat or Gator Hide will do that in an afternoon.

How to use

What you'll need: White Lightning Cleaner, a brush or sponge — a Premium Chip Brush, Synthetic Chip Brush or Foam N Dandy all work — a Sanding Sponge if you want to distress, and a top coat if the piece will get wet or heavy use.

Clean the piece. Wash it down with White Lightning to lift grease, wax and grime, then let it dry. This is the only preparation the paint needs. No sanding, no stripping, no primer.
Prime only if you have a reason to. Most pieces do not need it. Two do: bare wood that might bleed tannin through a white or a pale colour, and very slick surfaces like glass, laminate or metal where you want the extra insurance. Bonding BOSS handles both — white under pale colours, grey under mid tones, clear under dark ones.
Stir the paint. It is thick by design, and a little goes a long way. Stir it well before you start. If you would rather it went on thinner, add a small amount of water and stir again. Keep the lid on between coats, because it thickens as it stands.
Paint. Load a slightly damp brush and work in the direction of the grain. Do not overwork it — the paint is self-levelling and will settle as it dries.
Second coat if it needs one. Leave about 30 minutes, then go again. A darker colour will often cover in one coat; a lighter one usually takes two.
Distress, if you want to. Once dry, run a Sanding Sponge over the edges, corners and raised details where a piece would naturally have worn.
Decide about a top coat. The paint hardens on its own over 21 to 30 days and needs nothing else on a bookcase or a chest of drawers in a bedroom. If the piece is a kitchen or bathroom cabinet, a table top or an outdoor one — or if you simply want it protected today rather than next month — seal it. Dixie Belle Paint Company started in 2014 in Port Richey, Florida, and still makes its products there. Everything is mixed and poured in small batches rather than run off a production line — a slower way to work, chosen so that every tin behaves the same way as the last one.

The character of the brand is unmistakably Southern: warm, plain-spoken and not remotely precious about itself. Names like Sawmill Gravy, Kudzu and Best Dang Wax tell you most of what you need to know about the tone. The names are light-hearted; the products are not.

What holds the range together is that it is designed as a system rather than a catalogue. Paints, primers, top coats, waxes, stains and texture products are all made to work with one another, so the question is never whether one will sit happily over another. That matters most to the people the brand is really for — anyone who has looked at a tired piece of furniture and wondered where on earth to start. The products are built to be forgiving, and to get somebody to a good result without a workshop full of specialist kit.

What delivery services do you use?

We only ship within the United Kingdom.

All orders are sent via Royal Mail.

'Standard delivery' means Royal Mail Tracked 48. The expected delivery timescale for this is 2–3 working days.

'Express delivery' means Royal Mail Tracked 24. This is expected to arrive in 1–2 working days.

How much will delivery cost?

The charge for delivery is based on the service (standard or express) and on the weight of the parcel.

Delivery starts at £3.95 for standard, and £4.95 for express. As a guide, if your order is heavier than two 500ml pots of paint then it will probably move up to a higher price band.

When will my order be dispatched?

Orders placed before midday on weekdays (other than bank holidays) will be dispatched on the same day.

Orders received after that will be dispatched the next working day.

If, for any reason, this will not be possible, this will be clearly shown in a banner message at the top of the site.

You will notified by email when your order has been dispatched.
