Frequently asked questions
Can you use any primer as a base to apply the flakes?
No, the Fleur Universal Colour Primer is specially formulated to work with the Fleur Flake system. This primer is very thick with high solids and high viscosity, and this consistency is required to hold and embed the flakes. It is also very hard so you can sand it and the flakes once fully dry.
How do you apply the Universal Colour Primer?
You can apply it liberally with either a flat synthetic brush or a roller. Don’t worry if you see see brush marks: they will be removed during the sanding process.
How many colourways do the Fleur Flakes come in?
There are eight colourways in the collection: Moonstone, Green Jasper, Espresso Brown Marble, Brazilian Emerald, Tiger Eye, Bronzite Brown, Taupe Quartz and Onyx Black
Can you mix and match different colours of the flakes?
Yes, you can create a bespoke colourway to suit your décor or desired look for your project.
How do you apply the flakes?
Simply sprinkle them a few inches above the surface of the wet primer, add as few or as many as you like to create your desired effect. You may find it useful to practice sprinkling the flakes onto a dry surface until you are confident of getting an even coverage.
What colour is the primer?
The primer is available in three shades: Brown Grey, Light Grey and Dark Grey.
Do you need to use a specific shade of the Fleur Universal Colour Primer to go with a specific colour of the Fleur Flakes?
No, simply decide on the look you would like to create and go for it.
How long does the Universal Colour Primer take to dry?
Allow the primer to thoroughly dry for 24 hours before sanding
Why do you need to sand the surface once it is dry?
To remove loose and protruding flakes and to even out any brushmarks.
What grit sandpaper do I need to use?
We recommend using 180 and 120 sandpaper. You can sand by hand or with a sander depending on the size of your project.
Do you specifically need to use the Fleur Top Varnish to seal the Fleur Flakes?
Yes, you do. This is a highly durable, hard-wearing, water-resistant varnish.
How many coats of varnish do you need to apply?
This system has a high-build surface, so apply at least 3 — 4 coats of varnish to even out the transition between the flakes and the primer and to disguise any remaining brush marks.
What finishes does the varnish come in?
The varnish for the Fleur Flakes comes in Matt or Satin.
