Description Plus

Are you looking for a chic vintage sideboard, restyled to suit classy contemporary living?

Nathan is a brand that is synonymous with retro, vintage chic. It is undoubtedly one of the most loved and iconic furniture brands of the last century.

It is understated, yet so eye-catching, and when it has been restyled as carefully and sensitively as this piece has, it will fit effortlessly in any contemporary setting.

With 3 drawers and 3 cupboards, (both in two different sizes) this sideboard offers plenty of storage options.

It has a central pull-down cupboard door, which has been lined on the inside with a fun funky floral paper. The opening mechanism allows the door to open to a flat surface where you can prepare your favourite drinks and cocktails.

The half-width shelves make the cupboards ideal for storing all your bottles of wine and spirits.

The insides of the 3 drawers have been painted in a complementary shade of blue, with one drawer having a very useful cutlery divider.

The choice of a deep neutral green paint colour for the main body complements the dark wood top wonderfully. It brings a lovely modern vibe to the sideboard, whilst the geometric gold stencil design to the elegant square panelling adds a further dimension of interest and definition.

Finally, the overall clean, simple lines give the sideboard its elegance and practicality and make it instantly recognisable as a Nathan piece.

It would look amazing in a dining room to store your crockery and entertaining essentials. Or in the sitting room or family room, with family photos and ornaments on top, perhaps softly lit by an oversized table lamp with a lovely big shade.

If you’re lucky enough to have a large hall, or entryway, this would look amazing for general storage.

Truly a piece of furniture to grace your home for many years to come. A wonderful investment for you, your family, your home and, given the sustainability of upcycled furniture, the planet.

About Nathan furniture Plus

Nathan Furniture is known for high quality furniture of contemporary design, often Scandinavian-influenced.

The business was started in 1916 by Russian-born Barnett Nathan in East London, but did not really find success until 1952, when sons Jerrold and Clive joined Nathan and the approach became more design-led.

In 1963 Nathan introduced their first Scandinavian-style teak range, 'Citadel'. This elegant and functional range was very successful and has influenced the company's design aesthetic ever since.

Like many of the other manufacturers that rose to prominence in the post-war years, Nathan Furniture's golden years were the 1950s, 60s and 70s.

They are still in business producing beautifully-designed furniture, although in 2018 production was moved to Indonesia.

Nathan's 'Squares' range Plus

This range reflects Nathan's 1970s shift towards a slightly more traditional look, possibly reflecting the aging of their long-standing customer base.

The somewhat Jacobean feel of the panelled doors, though, is offset by the continued use of teak as a modern choice of wood.

Like other manufacturers of the time, such as Ercol and G-Plan, Nathan gave their range great flexibility with an extensive range of standalone pieces and of modular units, all of which shared a highly-defined look.

The strong design, wide selection of coordinating pieces, and contemporary popularity of the range have left it with an enduring appear and collectability.

Why choose vintage furniture? Plus

Deciding to invest in a piece of vintage furniture is a sustainable choice in helping to save the environment and our planet. It gives you the freedom and the opportunity to create a truly personal, unique and stylish interior design statement for your home, your stamp, and your mark. It’s your chance to distinguish yourself from the crowds who are so easily led by fast-made, mass-produced and indistinguishable furniture, which, more often than not has been transported from the other side of the world.

Vintage furniture will make your home feel very special; it has character and soul and will be unique to you. My customers often say “That’s different”, to which I always reply “It’s good to be different!” Vintage furniture really can tell a story that no modern piece ever can: it gives a nod to the past and a smile to the future.

Owning a piece of vintage furniture can give you a sense of pride and nostalgia, a feeling you simply cannot experience from new furniture. My ethos is to respect the character of the piece while always delivering a structurally sound and fully functioning item of furniture ready for its new chapter in life.

A great deal of love, care and attention goes into every refurbishment I undertake so that you can enjoy your furniture for many years to come.

About my furniture Plus

Building on a solid foundation

Before starting, every piece is thoroughly checked. Any faults, such as loose joints, surface damage, etc are addressed. You can be sure that I haven't just covered up problems with a 'lick of paint'.

Surfaces are fully prepared prior to painting to make sure that the finish will be durable and lasting.

The right products for best results

I only use high quality furniture paints and other specialist products that I know and trust. You'll find many of these products available in my 'paint shop'.

Out of sight, but not out of mind

It's not only the first impression that matters: details do too.

  • All edges, where 'painted' meets 'not-painted', are taped to ensure clean lines.
  • Backs of pieces are generally painted - not every piece will be placed against a wall.
  • Underneaths of pieces are painted if there is any chance of seeing them when a piece is in place.
  • The insides of cupboards, drawers, etc are cleaned and refreshed

Not just for show

Almost all furniture has to be practical as well as beautiful.

I apply varnish to surfaces that are likely to see heavier wear, so the painted finish will be protected.

Both before and after painting, all moving parts, such as doors or drawers, are checked for smooth operation.

Do you want to know more?

I am happy to answer any questions that you may still have, or to supply more photographs if needed.

Should you be close enough, you are also very welcome to visit my Brailsford studio to inspect any pieces.

Trust in experience

I have over 10 years of professional furniture painting experience, and everything I have learned during that time goes towards making sure that you will be delighted with your new piece of furniture.

But don't just take my word for it, see my testimonials from previous happy customers.
